I have a prototype version with 2d cardboard characters up and running and got a lot of good feedback yesterday on our Open Doors Day at Puppet Place.
Specially the Kids loved it.

... and the first 3d print of the character painted with acrylics. I guess her name is Zoe.

Two photos from Tuesday evening with Rusty Squid. I got great help from David McGoran for the strobo lights and Richard Sewell for running the motor.

Mads is working on the rig (the skeleton) of the character. Here is a screenshot without most of the geometry. I am doing some texturing. All still work in progress:

A quick drawing of the Zoetrope in my production book. This is how it could look when the parts come together.

We had a productive evening yesterday. Rob Stephenson from the Rusty Squid team, Dale and I were working on a 3d print in high resolution.
Here is the first test print of one leg still with the support material on. The next prints came out better.

Thanks to Rob who is brilliant in explaining complex stuff, I also got a step further with my stepper motor.

One Saturday this winter, when I was working in Hamburg, we went to see the big Pixar exhibition. Andy Spilsted (our animator) and me. We got very excited by the big Zoetrope they are showing there.

Back at my workspace at Puppet Place in Bristol, David and Rosi from Rusty Squid told me that a 3d Printer would arrive soon. A Makerbot Replicator 2x. Wow!

Zoetrope – wheel of life

The idea was born. I took the bird from my story that hadn't made it into a feature film ;-) and started to make a previs of my idea (you can see on vimeo)

With help of my friend Mads Simonsen who is working at The Third Floor, I then modeled the character. I am very very happy that he is also going to do the rigging for it.

Next step will be the animation and it looks like I got Jan Maas on board for that. Really great!

There is still a long adventurous way to go!

and then Emma came in this morning and encouraged me to publish my blog (and took the photo) so here we go!
